Hemant Karkare's wife turns down Modi's offer

Even as hundreds of thousands of Mumbaikar's came out onto the streets to pay their respects to national hero Hemant Karkare.
Politicians who came to pay their respects were sidelined by both the common man as well as the family of the deceased.
Karkare's wife, Kavita Karkare, refused to receive the amount from the Rs.1 crore reward announced by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for the families of the martyred officers.
She refused to meet any politician.
Just to recall, Modi along with other leaders of the BJP including prime ministerial candidate L. K. Advani and others from the Shiv Sena have been baying for Karkare's blood post the Malegaon investigations into the allegations of terrorist activities by the saffron brigade.
This is True Patriotism and Hinduism not the sham of the Hate Brigade....

Mumbai, Nov. 29: Her husband was dead, riddled with terrorist bullets, but Kavita Karkare was in no mood for sympathy, especially from people out to score a few political points.
Yesterday, as the nation simmered, she turned down the Rs 1 crore Narendra Modi had offered her as compensation, and virtually turned the Gujarat chief minister away from her doorstep.
Kavita had broken down at the first sight of her husband Hemant Karkare’s body at St George’s Hospital on Wednesday night. Since then, she has been stoically silent.
Yesterday, the 48-year-old college professor quietly rebelled against the political class.
“She told me ‘they can’t put a valuation on Hemant’s life. I won’t let them gain political mileage using his death’,” Kavita’s sister-in-law Amruta Karkare said after the slain cop’s funeral today.
It was not just Modi who went back quietly after Kavita refused to meet him.
“Didi has refused to meet any politician,” Amruta said.
Karkare
Kavita, whose blood pressure shot up after she saw her husband’s body, had been advised immediate hospitalisation by doctors at St George’s Hospital who thought she might suffer a stroke.
“But she just brushed away everyone and stayed by her husband’s side, holding his hand. No one could remove her from there. She is very strong-willed,” Amruta told reporters.
“She told me ‘I do not want to cry. I do not want to break down again before people. He would not have liked that’,” Amruta recalled.
Karkare, who headed Maharashtra’s anti-terror squad, additional police commissioner Ashok Kamte and senior inspector Vijay Salaskar had set out in search of the terrorists in a Qualis on Wednesday night when they were ambushed in a narrow lane.
The rebels later threw their bodies out of the vehicle and sped away.
Karkare was to have been cremated yesterday but his daughter Sayali, a student at the London School of Economics, missed her flight from Heathrow, Amruta said. “So we had to delay the cremation.”
This morning, his body was taken in a flower-bedecked open van, accompanied by a police band, from his home in Hindu Colony in Dadar East to the nearby Shivaji Park crematorium.
Over 5,000 people lined the 3km stretch to pay their last respects to the valiant cop. “Hemant Karkare amar rahe”, “Bharat Mata ki jai,” the crowd chanted as the hearse passed.
Top state leaders from all major political parties attended the funeral. Chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh came with local leaders and party activists.
NCP president Sharad Pawar was accompanied by deputy chief minister R.R. Patil, his party colleague.
The Shiv Sena’s Manohar Joshi, the BJP’s Nitin Gadkari and other political leaders — among them many who had spewed venom on Karkare till hours before his death — laid wreaths and garlands on his body.
Earlier, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray visited Karkare’s residence to offer condolences but left quickly after laying a wreath as Kavita refused to meet him.
Maharashtra police chief A.N. Roy and some of Mumbai’s top cops were among the pallbearers. Mumbai police commissioner Hasan Gafoor and joint commissioner (crime) Rakesh Maria refused to speak to reporters.
“We have lost one of our finest men. They were some of my best friends,” said Roy, his voice choking with tears as Karkare’s son Akash lit the pyre.

Karkare’s wife refuses Modi’s monetary help

A pensive Kavita Karkare at her
husband’s funeral on Saturday
• In the recent Mumbai attacks, we lost great police officers from Mumbai — Hemant Karkare, Ashok Kamte and Vijay Salaskar. I was completely taken aback when Gujarat CM Modi offered the ATS chief’s wife a cheque of Rs 1 crore. If he was sensible enough, he would know that it was a pitiful and stupid thing to do. A week ago, the same Hemant Karkare was considered an ‘anti-Hindu and an anti-national’. While politicians were trying to tarnish the image of Karkare, the honest and upright 'anti-national' led his men from the front when Mumbaikars needed someone who could lead from the front. Shame on you, Modi!

•  It’s only appropriate that Hemant Karkare’s widow has rejected the monetary assistance from Narendra Modi. I wonder how he would feel if he were in the same position, mourning his family member’s death in a situation like this, and someone offered money hoping it would get rid of his grief! The cops have given their lives to save ours. Let not politicians demean their sacrifice by attempting to win brownie points.

•  There might of course be a few rotten apples in the system, but by and large, if there is anyone that we can trust to save us from anti-nationals and terrorists, it is the security personnel guarding our nation. The very fact that ATS chief Hemant Karkare’s wife turned down the Rs 1 crore that the Gujarat government offered for the ATS chief’s unfortunate death, proves that these people and their families are beyond just living for money.

Q.
Hemant Karkare's wife, Kavita Karkare, refused to accept the monetary compensation announced by Narendra Modi. I think she made the right decision of keeping her husband's honor. What do you all feel about it?

Modi was abusing HEMANT KARKARE just a day before the attacks. Now he turns to his widow with this largesse.

Karkare family refuses Narendra Modi’s financial offer

By Abdul Hameed, TwoCircles.net,
Mumbai: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi had to face a kind of insult when ATS chief late Hemant Karkare's wife refused his offer to provide her and her children with the financial assistance.
Modi went to the houses of ATS officers Hemant Karkare and Vijay Salaskar who were killed by terrorists and offered for financial assistance. But Karkare’s widow Kavita Karkare and his children clearly refused the offer.
Noticeably, having known about Mumbai attack the chief minister of Gujarat visited the city. He was asked not to visit Taj Hotel yet he did and addressing a press conference alleged the government to be responsible for the attack.
Reacting to the refusal Narendra Modi said that he had offered for the assistance in recognition to the sacrifices of the valiant officers but people are taking it in other sense. 'I had extended the offer to all the heirs of those martyred during the operation,' he added.
Some media reports say that Modi had offered Rs one crore to the Karkare family. Kavita Karkare not only refused the offer she did not meet Modi when he visited her house unannounced. The Karkare family had thrice told Modi’s officials that they did not want to meet anyone.
ATS Chief Hemant Karkare was fiercely criticized by Modi and other BJP leaders including L K Advani for his role in exposing the hands of Hindutva terrorists in Malegaon and other blasts in the country. The BJP leaders had even demanded to change the ATS. They alleged the ATS officials of torturing Malegaon blast accused Sadhvi Pragya Singh and Lt Colonel Purohit.
